As we expand our commitment, our main focus continues to be carpets—an area that constitutes over 50% of our product range. We believe this initiative can lead to significant and immediate benefits for our planet.
The Issue at Hand - In the UK, over 15 million tonnes of rubbish from homes ends up in landfill every year, with a staggering 470,000 tonnes stemming from textile flooring waste alone. As individuals and businesses alike strive to adopt more sustainable practices, the need for innovative recycling solutions has never been more pressing. Companies are increasingly evaluating their raw materials, reducing waste throughout the supply chain, and minimising their overall environmental footprint.
Our Commitment to Change - Recognising that carpets play a pivotal role in our offering, we've embarked on a journey to enhance our environmental practices from the ground up. Our goal is to integrate sustainability into every step of our product lifecycle, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility throughout our organisation.
While we acknowledge that our carpets are not 100% recyclable due to the anti-slip backing bonded to them, we are committed to exploring creative alternatives to prevent them from ending up in landfills. This means looking for ways to repurpose carpets instead of discarding them, which not only reduces waste but also maximises their potential for further use.
Emphasising Reuse - Many carpets, even after serving their primary purpose in educational settings, remain in excellent condition and can find new life in various environments. We encourage schools and other organisations to think creatively about how they can reuse carpets rather than simply throwing them away.
One effective method for schools to reuse carpets is to utilise them for water, messy or outdoor play. Their thick pile serves as a useful resource for absorbing spills and messes, both indoors and outdoors. Additionally, we encourage schools to reach out to local animal charities, as second-hand carpets are often in demand for use in shelters.
To support this initiative further, we will continue to provide valuable information, tips, and suggestions on how to effectively repurpose carpets when they’re no longer suitable for their primary setting.
